Project Management Tool - Directing a Project
|
Directing a Project First of all what is project management? Philosophers as diverse as Descartes, Kiekergaard, Sartre, Cantona, Camus and, er other people, were asked 'what is project management?. Needless to say this caused them to wobble a lot. To avoid having to answer such a tricky question, they resorted to hiding behind the cloak of Epistemology - the theory of knowledge, or what is knowable. Bishop Berkeley an English philosopher, declared 'For an object to exist (a project) it must be perceived.' If it were not perceived it would not exist...as a project cannot be perceived it cannot exist. Therefore the concept of 'project management' is meaningless. Nevertheless, project managers the world over must manage and direct projects under their charge. Project management gurus' (spit) would have us believe we need 'Project steering groups'. A steering group is of course another of those oxymoron's like military intelligence or information technology. The only thing steering a project should be the project manager. If they are doing their job properly. If they are doing their job properly no one will have a clue which direction the project is actually going in - including the project manager. |
