We soon discovered that bicycle repairs were something you couldn’t avoid during the Trans-America trail of 1981.   Still there were also positive aspects; it was an excellent excuse for a rest stop, a good moment to work on the suntan and furthermore it was a social event as each passing bicyclist stopped to chat and lend a hand.
