Journal of Metics

Get to Know Linux

Just pretty photos

My Sme7 howto's :-

Hans-Cees Speel's (Drs.)homepage

This is the central point of my website: the home-page. On this page I discuss what has kept and is keeping me busy. You can navigate by the button-bar on the left to my CV, contact-information, my phd-topic, and see where I currently work.

The boxes on the right will lead you to the journal of memetics, some Linux topics and a number of photo pages. The photo pages are either about something: (pet-snakes and frogs and a tree-guide) or just about how beautiful photos can be. My tree-guide is an attempt to show how to recognize trees, but in a different way. I try to show a lot of detail but also much variety within a species. For some time the photo-pages will be ongoing work though:-(

The top-button bar takes you to pages on more general topics that interest me: On the academic side memetics (evolution of ideas and habits, but see a better definition there) and evolutionary theory (and philosophy of evolutionary theory). The other pages are less theoretic: my Linux pages with various topics. The democratic/civilization page and the hate pages are about what makes me angry. I hope my pages are useful for some!

Some things that keep or kept me busy:

  • I am (EX-Managing) Editor of the Journal of Memetics, Evolutionary Models of Information Transmission (JOM-EMIT).
      The new managing editors are David Hales dave@davidhales.com and Paul Marsden paul@viralculture.com;
  • I have been an IT-professional for some years now. Currently I work for Tunix at www.tunix.nl where I am a consultant doing mainly Tunix-firewall support. This means working a lot with freebsd and other unixes and also working on the organization of support.
  • In 2002 I moved to the east of the Netherlands (Nijmegen) where life is more easy going. This was inspired by the birth of our beautiful son Tieske, who is now (august 2002) 1.5 years old. We did not want to let him grow up without a garden to play in.
  • My former employer KPN (www.kpn.com) has sacked 5000 people under whom myself. I worked a year there as Unix engineer and had a great time. Learned a lot about cisco/nortel/3com switches and solaris/hp-ux.
  • Before that, from 1 march 2000 on I had started a new career as system engineer at a small company that installs and maintains mainly small windows-NT networks at middle-sized companies. My job was to learn how to be a senior system engineer, to manage the help desk and to advise the director how to set up the information and management structures in the company. Because it is a small company I could do all those tasks at the same time.
  • Before 2000 I was a PhD student Policy analysis for six years, from 1993 until Januari 2000. I delved deep into memetics. I have thus moved out of professional academia, mainly because I am a curious individual, but also because I very much needed a fresh challenge. Perhaps I will finish my thesis in the future, but we will see. I do continue to be an editor of the Journal of Memetics, since this is not a 40 hour per week responsibility and still a lot of fun. I am sort of the advisor of the new managing editors, and can now do some reviews after all these years.

    The future and my interests.

    The things that interest me are the internet and communication, as well as the problems and theories of public policy. I wrote before that my ideal new job would probably be to run a website about what the government does and why. However, the career I have taken now will get me a lot of technical knowledge of the internet and computers. I think I can use those in whatever direction I will be going in the future. For now I enjoy to see that private companies do not run automatically well either, as government doesn't.

    Apart from the communication side of the internet I am interested in the web and computer building side of it. I run a bunch of servers at home which I enjoy a lot. This is also the 'cause' of some Linux tutorials on this site. This also makes my new job very pleasant:-)
