| In 1993 I visited, together with Valentijn Münzer, the World Championships Speedskiing in Les Arc. I did not have much of a track record in skiing but the sport fascinated me. While Valentijn competed in this event, I went for a quest for someone who could teach me the first principles, the basis of speedskiing. All roads led me towards Häkä. Häkä, already in his sixties and still active in the speedski competition, is one of the most experienced speedskiers around. After some talk he invited me to train with him in Finland. Where Valentijn, having the shared Dutch and Austrian nationality, concentrated his training in Austria, I went to Finland to train with Häkä. Now, almost ten years later, we have a Dutch Speedski Team that steadily grow out of the pioneering status into a well orginized team. We participate in the Euro, World-Cup races and the World-Championships of the FIS. Last year one of us also raced with FSV. What makes our team so interesting are the different background in sports and profession of its members. Some of use where active and competed nationally and internationally in martial arts, hockey, rowing, American football, inline downhill, sailing, and speed surfing, and have professional backgrounds in the medical sciences like physiotherapy, sport sciences, and the exacted sciences. This expertise is now used systematically to help the members to compete at the best of their abilities. Find out more about the members here. |
