GOOD BOOK

Poor little hairy kids out on their own
They run to the festival to show that
They were one
They've fallen in love with all human kind
So tell them you love them
So they don't change their mind.

Write us a book of instructions or signs
And if it's been written
Then give us more time
Recite a poem or sing us a song
And tell us you love us
So we don't feel alone.

And it's sad that we weren't born
Like horses and sheep
To know where we're goin', to know
What we need
But you've written the music
So we'll sing along
But tell us you love us
So we don't feel alone

Give the poet a poem and the singer a song
And then tell us you love us
So we don't feel alone.

BABE RAINBOW

Babe rainbow
Keep your glow on
There's a show on you know
And they're all gonna be there
Put the gleam in your eyes
And do somethin' to your hair
Keep your glow on

Babe rainbow
Keep your glow on
Though your hand has
Been held away too long,
You're afraid to walk
The streets alone
Keep your glow on
Babe rainbow oh -
You gotta go on

It must be hard lookin' up at the sun
When you know in your heart
You might never be warm
I know it's hard lookin' up at the sun
When you know deep inside
You might never be warm

Babe rainbow
Dancin' to a slow dance
At a memory affair
When all the boys were there
Keep the gleam in your eyes
And don't let 'em know
You care
Keep your glow on
Babe Rainbow -
You gotta go on

SIGN ON THE WINDOW

Sign on the window says "lonely",
Sign on the door says "no company allowed",
Sign on the street says "you don't own me",
Sign on the porch says "three's a crowd",
Sign on the porch says "three's a crowd".

Sign on the window says "lonely",
Sign on the door says "no company allowed",
Sign on the street says "you don't own me",
I wanna find out what it's all about.
I wanna find out what it's all about.

Build me a cabin in Utah,
Marry me a man, catch rainbow trout,
Have a bunch of kids who call me ma,
That must be what it's all about,
Oh, that must be what it's all about.

Build me a cabin in Utah,
Marry me a man, catch rainbow trout,
Have a bunch of kids who call me ma,
That's gotta be what it's all about,
That's gotta be what it's all about.
I wanna find out what it's all about,
I wanna find out what it's all about.

THE SADDEST THING

And it's the saddest thing
Under the sun above
To say goodbye
To the ones you love

All the things
That I have known
Became my life
My very own
But before you know
You say goodbye
All the time goodbye
It's time to cry
But I will not weep
Or make a scene
Just say thank you life
For having been.

And the hardest thing
Under the sun above
Is to say goodbye
To the ones you love

I will not weep
Nor make a scene
Just say thank you life
For having been.

The loudest cry
Under the sun above
Is a silent goodbye
From the ones you love.

NICKEL SONG

Well you know that I'm not a gambler
But I'm being gambled on
They put in a nickel and I sing a little song
Da-da-da-da
They put in a nickel and I sing a little song

Well, I don't mind that they're lucky
But it seems that they always win
And gamblin' is illegal in the state of mind I'm in
And if I had a nickel for each time that
I've been put on
I would be their nickel man
And I'd sing a little song

They're only putting in a nickel and
They want a dollar song
They're only putting in a little to
Get rid of a lot that's
Wrong.

Well I don't know so many things
But I know what's been goin' on
We're only putting in a little
To get rid of a lot that's wrong
And if we had a nickel for each time that
We've been put on
We'd all be their nickel man
And we'd sing a nickel song

You know they're only putting in a nickel
And they win a dollar song
Oh, yeah, they're only putting in a little
To get rid of a lot that's wrong
Oh, they're only putting in a nickel
To win a dollar song

ISN'T IT A PITY

Isn't it a pity
That I'm not
The prettiest girl
In the world
'Cause sometimes
I feel
When I kick up
My heels in the sun
I'm
The
Loveliest
One

MY FATHER

My father always promised us we would live in France
We'd go sailing on the Seine and I would learn to dance.
We lived in Ohio then and he worked in the mines.
On his streams like boats we knew we would sail in time.

All my sisters soon were gone to Denver and Cheyenne,
Marrying their grown-up dreams, the lilacs and the man.
I stayed behind the youngest and only danced alone,
The colors of my father's dreams faded without a sigh.

And now I live in Paris and my children dance and dream,
Hearing the story of a miner's life in words they never seen.
I sail my memories abold like boats across the Seine,
And I watch the Paris sun set in my father's eyes again.

My father always promised us we would live in France
We'd go sailing on the Seine and I would learn to dance.

CHORDS OF FAME

I found him by the stage last night,
He was breathing his last breath,
A bottle of gin and a cigarette
Was all he had left.
Well, I know that you make music
'Cause you carry your guitar,
But God help the troubadour
Who tries to be a star.
Come on and play the chords of love my friend,
Play the chords of fame
But if you wanna keep your song, no no no,
Don't play the chords of fame, oh no no.

You know I've seen my share of hustlers
As they try to take the world,
And when they find their melody
They're surrounded by the girls.
But it all fades so quickly
Like a sunny summer day;
Reporters ask you questions
And may write down what you say.
So come on and play the chords of love my friend,
Play the chords of fame
But if you wanna keep your song, no no no,
Don't play the chords of fame, oh no no.

They'll rob you of your innocence,
They'll put you up for sale,
The more that you will find succes,
The more that you will fail.
I'd been around, I had my share
And I really can't complain
But I wonder who I left behind
On the other side of fame
Oh come on and play the chords of love my friend,
Play the chords of fame
But if you wanna keep your song, no no no,
Don't play the chords of fame, oh no.
No, oh don't play the chords of fame,
Oh don't, no don't, don't play the chords of fame.

YOU CAN GO FISHIN'

You can go fishin'
Stay out all night
You can go fishin'
Baby it's all right and
You can go fishin'
'Cause you're off my mind

You can go ramble
Far from my door
And baby you can ramble
Like you always did before
Baby you can ramble
I'm givin' you the sign
And you can go fishin'
'Cause you're off my mind

You can go ramble
All that you want
And baby you can gamble
All the little things
You want and
Baby you can gamble
All the things
I've never known and -
You can go fishin'
I'm givin' you the sign
And you can go fishin'
'Cause you're off my mind

Oh baby you can cry too
All day and morn
Baby you can cry too
With somebody all alone
And baby you can cry
On any shoulder but my own
And you can go fishin'
I'm givin' you the sign
And you can go fishin'
'Cause you're off my mind

BIRTHDAY OF THE SUN

Oh I'm the one - I found the birthday
Of the sun
All things change an' now
It's the birthday of the rain
If I never said goodbye to all
That I've known
I would never be alone

But still - well I would not cry -
I'm not finished yet - boy -
So wipe the smile from your eyes
'Cause if I were to hang my head
I'd miss all the rainbows
And I'd drown in raindrops instead.

I'm gonna win -
I'm not finished yet - boy -
So wipe the smirk from your chin
'Cause if I were to hang my head
I'd miss all the rainbows
And I'd drown in raindrops instead.

And all things change
Happy Birthday to the rain

THE PRIZE

You sell the story
It's me who cries
You are the maker
And I'll be the Prize
I sing it strong
You sympathize
Yet you watch on
As you see me die
You the maker
Me the Prize.

And won't she be surprised
When she hears the people say
He's the one who made her
What she is today
And when your selling's done
I would love to be the one
But I'm only one lady
You got nine lives - yeah -
I'm the temporary prize

Yeah you sell the story
But it's me who cries
And you'll be the winner of the prize.

And won't she be surprised
When she hears the people say
He's the one who made her
What she is today
Now when your selling's done
Oh I would love to be the one
But I'm only one lady
You've got nine lives
And you'll be the winner
Of the Prize
Yeah, you can sell the story
But it's me who cries
You'll be the maker
I'll be the Prize.
