Wow, did I ever enjoy reading about your adventures while travelling through Cuba. My husband, daughter and I travelled from Puerto Padre, Las Tunas to Santiago de Cuba in 2004 and we had an amazing time. Your description of El Morro Castle and La Casa Grande Hotel, and the poor state of the roads, brought back many memories for me. When time permits, I hope we can some day do as you and see all of Cuba. I admire your "adventure-ness". We've been to Cuba three times now, and always long for the day when we can return. We are planning our fourth trip for this April, and I can hardly wait to see what adventures are in store for us! By the way, during your Cuban travels, did you happen to try freshly-pressed sugar can juice at a road-side stand? I think it's called guarapera. Wow, it's very good but gives you a very quick sugar high and then an equally quick sugar low! Take care.

thanks for the stories and nice photos of my home land. Just wanted to correct your history, Cubans did not kick US butt, if only the US had gotten involved it would have never happened. And Castro is not a 20th century hero. Tell that to my dad who was in prison for 8 years for no reason, not even being against the government. He was even fooled (one of many millions) and fought along side the revolution in El Escambray hills. Or the hundreds of inmates who he became friends with that never got out of prison alive to see their families, to hold them. To those who were fed warm water with dead worms floating along with the spaghettis and medicine to cause diarrhea, those who stood in front of the line of fire. Those who have lost families trying to flee the regime, like my cousin who's plane was shot down and die along with women and children just for trying to leave the country who denies them freedom or the hope to find it. I could go on and on but there is not enough room on your server to hold all this info. It is hard to visit my family and see the conditions they live in, ahh! almost forgot, yes free health care! but we have to send them from the USA the medicines from simple aspiring to even x-ray films not to mention they must take their own bed sheets and anything else they need for any stay in a clinic. Did any of the children you saw playing on the streets were wearing shoes and shirts? Hotels were sometime empty and sometimes full, but did you ever encounter a cuban family staying there for vacation, guess not, they are not allowed unless they are government controlled prostitutes for hire to satisfy the needs of tourists. any how, glad you visited my beautiful lost paradise of Cuba and met some real nice cuban people there.

What a great website! I thoroughly enjoyed the pictures and descriptions. I'm heading to Cuba soon w/ a foundation to bring medicines over and will stay a few days. After reading your website, i would like to stay longer and explore the country more. I've been to Cuba before, but never left Havana. As I am an American I have to tell you that I also enjoyed reading the guestbook of all the great comments from people everywhere. {I did see one idiotic comment "levi's coke, etc" from a guy who claims he's american, if he is, he's an embarrasement to us, but please ignore the idiots.} I have never been to the netherlands, but been to Europe 4 times and loved it. Next trip hopefully I'll make it. I just finished reading about your adventure in Cuba and I have been left thoroughly amused! I will be making notes to use while on our trip. One of the reasons your web site caught my attention, was because we are currently communicating with "Horizontes Travel" and making reservations for the Flexi Plan! What do you think after all you experienced, said and did, would you recommend Horizontez to anyone? I just finished reading about your adventure in Cuba and I have been left thoroughly amused! I will be making notes to use while on our trip. One of the reasons your web site caught my attention, was because we are currently communicating with "Horizontes Travel" and making reservations for the Flexi Plan! What do you think after all you experienced, said and did, would you recommend Horizontez to anyone? According to what you had to say about Horizontes, I would say that you don't expect to be using their services any time soon???? Haaaaaaa! I will be traveling to Cuba in March, 2003, so consequently I have been reading all I can in preparation for our trip. I was born in Cuba (1956) and left with my family in 1961 after the famous so called revolution. As you can imagine the emotion I am currently experiencing is great and the anticipation is causing me sleepless nights. I have lived in California, U.S.A., most of my life and have had little contact with the Cuban community. It has only been within the last few months that I have reconnected with my extended family in Cuba. What a joy to have found each other again and sad at what I know awaits me when I get there; (reality in the way they are forced to live) it is pretty awfull. My family there has insisted that my husband and I stay with them, etc.., but since this is our first time and I'm not sure how they live, (I have been told, they do live a little better than most), I thought it best to start out in a Hotel. When we came across Horizontes on the Internet, we thought, they had exactly the kind of package we are looking for, but after reading your story I'm not sure now! Our plans are to fly from Miami, Florida straight to Havana, Cuba, I can do that, because I was born there. I have been finding out that the U.S. restrictions are really not restricting anyone to speak off. Our airlines throughout the U.S. are full every week with passengers flying direct to Cuba. The only hassle has been the Visa, but that is not too bad.
I would love to hear from you and any advice as well will warmly received.

Thank you for spending the time to write down your experiences of Cuba. We also travel without planning and shared most of the experiences you described when we hired a car at Havana airport in November 2000. We had the same bewildering experience of trying to find our way in a predominantly dark city. Like you we speak some Spanish and learned that it was best to ask the very friendly (as it turned out)local people. We shall be making our third visit this autumn and will use your tips about Santiago which we did not reach on our earlier visits. Thank you again.

I am going to Cuba for the Second time. I want to drive around Cuba like you guys did. I have already made reservations and I am schedule to go in June. It seems from your observations that the best way to get around is with the hitchhickers. Any comments you care to make other than what you already said. I aslo plan to stay in these "casa paticulares", any comment on this would also be helpful. I will be going for a week. Do you think I can go across from Havana to Santiago in a week? Let me know.

Great Travelogue, We live in Twrinidad the island not the town in Cuga. Me and the wifey are not into typical touristy holidays, and this is why cuba is on the hit list must see places.
I think from reading your account it would be sensible to leave the babies (3 and 4 years) at home. They are pretty hardy girls, what do you think.

I have just returned to the UK from a carribean cruise. Our last destinations were an absolutely unspoilt Cuban Island called Caya Guilliamo and Havana Itself. We were the first cruise ship ever to visit the Island and I can only say it is one of the most stunning places I have visited. The cubans arrived by boat I assume bringing rough and ready bars ,bbq's etc and made us feel really welcome. The music too abounded and we could hardly drag ourselves away.
Two days in Havana wetted our appetite for all things Cuban and we intend to return for a longer visit this year.
