Anders Johansson's RG500 [Rolf Euren tuning]

Rolf Euren doesn't do much RG500 tuning work any more. He still has his Gamma (and what a BIKE!), but he doesn't take on any work on other bikes. It seems he realized there are other things in life than Gammas and dark garages... (Rolf does have a daytime-job as well, so maybe he needs to do other things in the evenings) He does help a lot with advice and contacts to other Gammaniacs in Sweden though, and I'm sure he would help anyone that asked him with details on how to tune a Gamma. My bike was tuned by Rolf in the winter of '93-'94, and it has Rolf's "standard" Gamma modifications: undercut 2:nd gear, modified heads/squish, single layer headgasket (using the stock gasket layers), modified ports & exhaust (slightly, and in Rolf's words, "to look like the RGV 250's"), modified cases, countersunk intake-bolts, modified intakes & intake-"gaskets" (the plastic bit between carb&intake), modified exhaust valves (less restrictive) and cut slides (sorry, no figures on how much). Pistons are also balanced and maybe also slightly modified.

The exhaust port diameters were made to match the Jolly Moto pipes that I have (older version, 2 pipes on each side).

I think I remember this correctly, but I haven't actually measured it myself: The volume of the compression chamber is 11.5 cc each, but Rolf said he usually went down to 11.2 or 11.3, to get maximum performance on super (98 octane). I wanted the slightly lower compression to get a more durable engine, especially since the petrol today isn't always very good.

Rolf could also bore the carbs (which I haven't done on my bike).

My Gamma was quite slow before (completely stock). I could get to 200-205 km/h (approx 120 mph), but 5th and 6th gear felt like an overdrive. (mileage: 30000 km, 20000 miles). It would not rev above 9500-10000, but power started at 6000-6500.

After the tune, I started out with 160 mains and an opened-up stock air-filter (most of the plastics removed, filter retained, all on Rolf's recommendation), and a 17 teeth front sprocket (16 stock). Now only 6th felt like an overdrive, and the bike does 230-240 kmh (150 mph). The bike now revs to at least 12000-12500, and power comes on at 7500-8000. No dyno-figures available.

A set of Lance Gamma Uni-filters & fuel-valves are on the bike now, and a set of smaller sprockets are on for testing, but I haven't had much time for it this summer. The bike also has a steering-damper now (Recommended!) and an EMC Dynamics rear shock. The rear shock is approx 10 mm longer than stock, to improve handling, especially with diferent wheels. I will thus try different wheels (3"x17" & 3.5"x17" fronts and 3.5"x17" and 4.5"x17" rears. Lots' of wheels seem to be easily adapted to this bike (GSXR400, RGV250, GSXR750/1100, etc).
