Subject: Carb boring
With the exception of the premix guys who
don't care, the main issue is that the oil
valves are partially destroyed in a carb
bore, period.
Some bore-er's (new word) cleave off the
pipe and leave it that way, and you go on
your merry way. Any I won't argue that
there are many bikes running around like
that today.
Our approach is different. And it stems
from our belief that you get much better
oil atomization or mixing in mid-stream, and
obviously Mikuni thought so too. Oil
injected there is immediately released as
tiny droplets. Alternatively, if it comes
out of a cut-off orifice, flush with the
venturii its going to want to flood along
the surface of the carb throat rather than
enter the air stream. You'll still get some
mixing, and the same quantity of oil is
going to get inside somehow, but not as
effectively or evenly.
The little side benefit of our system is
that we also check inside the valve itself
(light spring and ball bearing) for proper
operation since we have to take it apart
anyway. No, we don't put in a 'better'
system, but we make sure the existing one is
working like it should (which isn't perfect
as you know) and it hasn't been fouled by
prodding or compressed air or milling chips
or crud coming from the supply line or
whatever. We re-manufacture the lower or
inside pipe portion and fit that to the
salvaged upper pipe portion after
re-installing the valve.
The new piece that protrudes into the
venturi also has a slightly improved,
cupped end with a sharper edge to promote
release of the oil, but this is just a
minor touch.
