News for ECS student members
Update April 2008
Welcome to the ECS’s students !
Dear students,
on the following pages I have placed information and links of use to
all students interested in marine mammal science. With these pages I
would like to establish an information network exchange among students
and between students and different organisations.
I will be updating these pages so keep checking it out!
Polona Kotnjek (ECS Council – Student representative 2008-2010)
Student Representative
More than 50% of the ECS-membership consists of students. Therefore, in
1996, a new member was elected into the ECS-council, the Student
Representative, who represents the students of the Society. The student
member on the Council has the status of a full member, not confined to
commenting on student issues.
Every other year a new Student Representative can be elected at the
Annual General Meeting (AGM) during the ECS conferences, by the
students attending the conference.
Overview over all Student Representatives

2006-2008: Kristina Salzer, Germany
2008-2010: Polona Kotnjek, Slovenia
Current Student Representative
My name is Polona Kotnjek and I come from Ljubljana, Slovenia. I am a Biology student at University of Ljubljana.
Beside my studies I do voluntary work with Marine mammal research and conservation society called Morigenos.
For the past 6 years we are working with a bottlenose dolphin
population in the most Northern part of the Adriatic sea. Our research
includes photo identification and studying behaviour and interaction
with human fishing activity. We also have an outreach programme
to raise public awareness and as educational coordinator I have
experience of organising events and lectures as well as organising
other events such as our Dolphin summer camps and Dolphin Day.
While working with marine mammals in different projects I have
gained skills and knowledge which I think are necessary to fulfil the
student representative position.
As the student representative I am here to keep you informed and to
represent your interests in the ECS council. Therefore, I wish to
provide more useful information to you through these webpages and
through the mailing list. I will stay in contact with you to keep you
informed as to what happens in the Council and ask for your opinion.
I am enthusiastic about being ECS student
representative because I want to be more involved in the
society and represent the large number of student members to the ECS
council.
So please let me know whenever you have any ideas, opinions or
questions concerning the ECS board, courses, workshops, internships
etc...
