You and the society's email lists

ECS Mailing lists A^o 1992; ECS Discussion groups A^o 2004

The Society maintains several Mailing lists on JISCmail, where we are the guest of the Council for the Central Laboratories of the Research Councils (CCLRC). This service used to be Mailbase of the University of Newcastle, where we were guest since 1992(!). There are three lists open for general use:

• ECS-Talk is the central mailing list. Here ECS members and non-members alike can exchange views, put forward questions and provide answers. This list is open to subscription. Requests, book reviews, announcements for conferences and museum displays and the like are most welcome.
• ECS-Students is the ECS mailing list for (university) student members and non-members. This list is open to subscription. Students are advised also to take a subscription to ECS-Talk.
• ECS-Ethics is the contact mail list for the ECS Ethics Committee. Please send questions regarding ethics issues to this address.
• ECS-Council is used to channel information to and between members of the ECS Council.
• ECS-NCP is the contact mail list for National Contact Persons. Messages can be sent to all these contact persons, but it is preferred if you contact the national person in question directly. See the contact page for more information.
• ECS-Members is used to send messages to ECS members only,
• ECS-Old to members from previous years and
• ECS-All to all list members. Those lists can only be used by ECS-members but postings will be moderated by the list owners. Only messages that have a direct link with being a ECS member will be accepted. Use ECS-Talk for general messages.

Access JISCmail and get a password to fully appreciate the list options. You are then able to search the list(s) on-line for member’s mail address, access the long term repository of postings and change all settings for the way in which you receive the list postings.

The JISCmail server also provides the option to set up on-line discussions with people from your mailing list. This setup looks like MSN or Instant Messenger but is directly related to the mail list. See the JISCmail server for more details.

Our simple rules:

1. Use the mailing list only for information concerning whale or dolphin research.
2. Please keep the conversation polite and direct your answer only to the sender and not the list.
3. Refrain from SPAM (unwanted advertisements).
4. Non ECS members are welcome to the lists, but the list owners retain the right to remove you from any list without prior notification or reason given.
5. Questions:
   • For any JISCmail list related subject, please refer to the JISCmail web site for answers.
   • If you have any questions regarding the ECS lists in particular, contact the list owners.

   • For questions concerning the ECS or membership, please contact the ECS Council.

How do you join, use and leave?

• How do you join one of the lists? Simply click for ECS Talk or ECS Students.
• If you want to inform or ask any list member, simply send an e-mail to ecs-talk@jiscmail.ac.uk or ecs-students@jiscmail.ac.uk. You must be a list member of the list before you can send a message!

• If you need to leave the list (e.g. because your mail address will be closed down), please, please, please, unsubscribe the list by clicking: ECS-Talk or ECS-Students.

You can adjust many personal settings on Jiscmail. How often do you want messages, what should the header look like, are you out of the office for a longer while... Please go there and get a password.

If you feel the need to get into contact with the owner of the list, send a request to the address ecs-listname-request@JISCmail.ac.uk (e.g. ecs-talk-request@jiscmail.ac.uk).

No email?

If the list owners (or the jiscmail system) recieve (many) error messages a day, saying that your mail box cannot be reached, you will be removed from the lists. You will not be notified of your removal (because your mail box cannot be reached). Why can't my mailbox be reached, you ask? Well, there are several reasons.

1. JISCmail looks at the FROM address to check you out. If your FROM address is not accurate, this may cause a problem. Your FROM address may change. Let's say from 'jdoe@' to 'john.doe@'. This may be caused by your system administrator, your mail server or, worse, by yourself!
2. Your luck or money or both may run out (or your internet service provider ran out of luck or money or both). System down. Temporary or permanently.

3. Mail box full?

You are always capable of rejoining as described above. Also, if your mail address changes and you are not able to send an UNsubscribe (or leave) message from your OLD address, please notify the list owners. If you do not receive regular (mail man) mail, look here.
