The creative world of Gijs van Rij

A very important activity in life is creativity.

Music

"Music is anything we call music"
Misha Mengelberg   (composer/pianoplayer)
"What is the correct note?
The correct note is always another one!"
Louis Andriessen   (The Netherlands first professor/composer)

To me music is very important. Music with a capital M.
The M of More Music.
Or More, More, More as in the title of the live album of the Tröckener Kecks.

Making music by myself or just listening to it. As long as there's music.

Making music

I like to make sound-scapes with computers.
As can be seen on this newspaper picture of a work I did together with Pieter Zandvliet
A multimedia 'Christmas tree'.

Foto Mirjam Dijkstra

The text ran: "Ask an artist to respond to the term Christmas tree and anything can happen. The result can even be an object with computers."

Artist mind you.

Or in this picture of a computer JukeBox playing a selection of music from www.mp3.com.

In short "I like to mess about with sounds and computers."

You can even do that via the internet. Here is an on-line example.

Or download the 12 tone instant composer that would have made Schönberg jealous.
(Please use the antivirus scanner !!).

Listen to the music: Play a record

Who doesn't like to play a CD, record or nowadays an mp3? So do I.
Al those CD's and records that I've been buying all my life, add up to a huge pile.
I wouldn't quite call it a collection. Collectionneurs have collections of tens of thousands copies. I definitively haven't got those numbers of records. But it's quite an heap.
Look here (in Dutch).

Here you can find an ever changing number of high- lights from my collection (in Dutch).

Photography

I like to take pictures.
Here you can see a selection.

Ceramics

From time to time I make ceramic objects (definitively no jars or bowls).
Just messing about with your hands in clay seems a way to compensate for my technical work hours.
So it seems.
In the end you need a lot more technical skills to get a reasonable result.
Here you can see a selection.

Two dimensional work

As it's officially known. Drawings and Paintings.
And there are a lot more options than just a pencil and paper!.
Here you can see a selection.
