This is the homepage of Envelope, a security program for Windows (3.x, 95, 98, NT4), which uses PGP® 2.6.x. With Envelope, you can very easily encrypt, decrypt, sign and check messages and files. It works together with most e-mail applications and newsreaders. You will not need to copy and paste anymore, you only need to press on a button, and everything will happen automatically ;-)

If you download a copy of Envelope with 'PGP inside', Envelope will automatically install PGP and do all the things that are necessary to use it. But of course it can work with an existing copy of PGP too.

Envelope without PGP (for people who already have PGP):

All distributions have the same Envelope-program inside. People from the USA can better use MIT's PGP262. The international version PGP263i is illegal in the USA because of RSA licences. The international version PGP263i (32-bit DOS version with patch a) is faster and has some bug-fixes, so I will advise people from outside the USA to use this version. Envelope needs vbrun300.dll to work. Many people will have it already (in "\windows\system"), so there is no need to download it again.

If you have only e-mail access to the Internet, you can get an uuencoded copy of Envelope by e-mail by sending a message to: w3mail@gmd.de, with in the body of the message:

And you will get Envelope uuencoded. You will need the program "uudecode.exe" to make an executable from the e-mails that you get. Simply copy all e-mails together in a file and do "uudecode <filename>". If you would like more help, send a message with only "help" to w3mail.

A little more information about Envelope

Envelope is a program that can encrypt / decrypt / sign / etc. messages with use of PGP, inside of many e-mail and news programs like Eudora, Pegasus, (Free) Agent, Netscape, Explorer and many more. It makes a little controlbar with 4 keys on your screen. If you press on the <encrypt> button, the text in the active program will be automatically copied to the clipboard, encrypted, and pasted back in the application. Envelope can copy the headers of many e-mail programs and "replace" them in PGP-keyID's.

Envelope can handle (in many programs) windows that cannot be changed, like the in-box in most e-mail programs. It will copy the output from a decrypted message in a reply to that message. Envelope can automatically switch between programs, and use the correct configurations for them. So it will, for example, use an Eudora-config for Eudora and an Agent-config for Agent. You can write your own configuration for a program, or add new configurations directly from the Envelope webpage.

In the "more-menu" are special functions for handling keys and signs, file functions, breaking long lines, checking signs, etc. Envelope can automatically install PGP (there are copies with the PGP-zipfile "inside"), even if there already is a bad or older PGP installation. But it can also use an existing copy of PGP. Envelope can remember your password (it does not leave the password in the swap-file as far as I can detect), but it can open a DOS-box with PGP to ask the password too. Envelope can be associated with the ".PGP" and ".SIG" extention. If you press on a .SIG-file, it will check the signature. If you press on a .PGP-file, it will decrypt it if it is an encrypted file and it will add the keys to the keyring if it is a keyfile.

Envelope was tested with Win311, Win95, Win98 and WinNT4, it is a 16-bits program. It is shareware, but you can use it fine without registering it, too.

Does Envelope work with my program?

In many cases Envelope will work by default with your program because many configurations are coming with  Envelope. Normally Envelope will automatically use the correct configuration for your program, but not in all cases. Envelope can also work without a configuration, but less automatically. Some more information:

• Agent / Free Agent. It works as far as I know with all versions till 1.5. I have not seen a newer version.
• Ameol. Friends on the CIX network have tested it with Ameol32 version 1.22.04 and with one of the first versions of Ameol2. The configurations what come with Envelope seem to work OK.
• BeyondMail for Windows. You need a new configuration: BeyondMail for Windows but there is a little problem because BeyondMail can use e-mail adresses with spaces and Envelope cannot. I have a special version of Envelope that can use e-mail addresses with spaces, please ask me for it.
• E-Mail Connection. I have only tested it with an old version: 2.5.03, I have no experience with newer versions.
• Eudora Pro/Light. It works well with versions till 3.03. If you have version 3.05 or later you need a new configuration; you can get it here: Eudora 3.05 and 4.0x. If you are using Eudora 4.0 you need to turn-off HTML-support with "tools | options | viewing mail | Use Microsoft's viewer". Somebody did send me this configurations for Eudora 4.3 and Eudora 5.0, I did not test them.
• GroupsWise. If you like to use GroupsWise 5.2 you need this configuration: Groupswise 5.2. I do not have experiences with other versions of GroupsWise.
• Helpfiles (Winhelp). It works good in Win95 or WinNT. With Win3x you need to choose "edit | copy", this will open a special window, Envelope can work in this window.
• Juno. The Juno configuration works fine, but if you are reading a message, like in the in-box, you must select the article from the article-list if you want to decrypt it. Do not put the cursor in the text of the message, because this will not work with this configuration.
• Microsoft Exchange. Envelope works with version 4 that comes with Win95, but slow.
• Microsoft Word. Works without a configuration.
• Microsoft Internet Explorer. Envelope works fine with MSIE 3, Internet Mail and Internet News. You can encrypt and decrypt messages, but normally you cannot automatically copy the headers from MSIE to use them as a keyID, so you need to type the keyID for the recipient yourself. Look at "Microsoft Outlook" for MSIE 4.
• Microsoft Outlook. You need a new configuration: Outlook. I did test this configuration with version 4.72.3110.5, what came with Windows98. It is important to know that you must not open a message to decrypt it. In the inbox you can see left-under some text of the message, so you can see that the message is encrypted. You can click on <decrypt> in Envelope to decrypt the message. You cannot decrypt an open message (you will get a "no text found" error), but if you make a reply of this message you can decrypt the reply if you like. Sorry, this configuration cannot automatically copy the headers to find the PGP key. Later I will make a new version of Envelope with a pull-down-menu for keys, what makes it more easy to find the right key.
• Microsoft Outlook Express. You need a new configuration: Outlook Express but I must tell that it was a long time ago that I made this configuration and I do not know exactly what version I used. Please contact me if you have any problems.
• NCSA Mosaic. Tested with version 2.0 to send encrypted e-mail.
• Netscape. The English version of Netscape 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 works fine with Envelope. In international versions, it can be that you must translate the windowtitle of the configuration for a 'new message' and a 'reply'. Envelope looks in the windowtitle for the application-name, and if it finds 'new message', it will use this configuration. But, if the windowtitle in your language gives another title, like 'nieuw bericht' in Dutch, Envelope cannot find the configuration, and will use the default-configuration. This default-configuration will work fine, but has some limitations. If you use Netscape 4.0 you need a new configuration: Netscape 4.0. In Netscape Envelope can only pick up the first recipient. Normally you need to be in the message if you like to decrypt, in Netscape you need to select the message in the list of messages, you must not be in the text of the message itself.
• Notepad. Works without a configuration.
• Pegasus Mail. Tested with version 2.5.3. Version 3.0 needs a new configuration: Pegasus Mail 3.0. Sometimes the lines of the PGP message will be broken at the moment you send the message, my advice is to use a fixed font and to change the linelength into 80 characters (default is 70). I do not have experience with the HTML functions in Pegasus 3.0.
• Pronto. A configuration for Pronto comes with Envelope, but it's not very well tested. It seems that it does not work sometimes, but if you restart Pronto it does work again. Please contact me if you use this program.
• Wordpad. Works without a configuration.
• WordPerfect Works without a configuration.

Please ask me for other configurations.

Registering Envelope

First of all: Envelope will work without a registration, but it will put some text at the end of a message that you send, so that the recipient can see that you did not register. Further it will sometimes pop up a message when you close the program, with something like "Don't forget to register, today is a nice day for it". I do not have real problems with it if a private person uses Envelope without a registration but you will understand that I also need some people who will register. Without registration there is no money for my work.

If you are living in another country and you have a credit card (or a friend who has one), you can use this secure online registration (if you have a modern browser) or this insecure online registration. The price is 20 US dollars (I must pay 4 organisations and wait a long time to get this money). Commercial licenses are 30 US dollars (one user).
