Gavarnie (1374 m)
Gavarnie is in het hoogseizoen een echte potjeskermis. Honderden toeristen lopen vanaf hier naar het Cirque de Gavarnie, of laten zich er per muilezel naar toe dragen. Gavarnie is de uitvalsbasis voor een aantal tochten: naar de Refuge de la Breche de Roland, de Gave d'Ossoue (Loúrdes), de Refuge des Espuguettes, of een 2-daagse tocht om de Montagne de Coumély. Mid season Gavarnie is a real tourist trap. Hundreds of tourist walk from here to the Cirque the Gavarnie, or, worse, have themselves carried on horse or muleback. Gavarnie forms the ideal base for numerous tours: to the Refuge de la Breche de Roland, the Gave d'Ossoue (Loúrdes), the Refuge des Espuguettes, or a 2 days trip around the Montagne de Coumély.
