Chess Events in Maastricht The chess club MSV organised a master tournament in 1946. It became a big success for Max Euwe. Local hero Alex Vinken had a won endgame against him, but it ended as a draw. Maastricht 1946
No main chess event occurred for decades in Maastricht. Maarten van Gils wanted to do something about it. He got the support of Brorens and Van Reek. Chess Events Maastricht Foundation was established in 2000.
The first chess event became the match of the 'greatest computer killer' John van der Wiel against the smartest program Rebel Century. It was played at the Centre Céramique at Maastricht in January 2001.

Maarten van Gils sadly died during the preparation of the second match. Jos Uiterwijk joined the organisation. The Dutch champion Loek van Wely played Rebel Century in February 2002. Again thousands of internet visitors followed an exciting match.
