Chess Events in Maastricht

The chess club MSV organised a master tournament in 1946. It became a big success for Max Euwe. Local hero Alex Vinken had a won endgame against him, but it ended as a draw.

Limburgian champion Vinken plays Dutch champion Euwe

No main chess event occurred for decades in Maastricht. Maarten van Gils wanted to do something about it. He got the support of Brorens and Van Reek. Chess Events Maastricht Foundation was established in 2000.

The founding fathers of the Chess Events Maastricht Foundation:

Daniel Brorens, Maarten van Gils and Jan van Reek in 2001

The first chess event became the match of the 'greatest computer killer' John van der Wiel against the smartest program Rebel Century. It was played at the Centre Céramique at Maastricht in January 2001.

The fourth match game is about to start. Loek van Wely is ready behind the white pieces. Ed Schröder of Rebel Century 4 will handle Black. Eric van Reem takes pictures. Nico Schelling and Geurt Gijssen talk about the organisation. Jan van Reek smiles in anticipation of a great fight. Daniel Brorens enters the room behind him. Hans Adriaanse takes this photograph.

Maarten van Gils sadly died during the preparation of the second match. Jos Uiterwijk joined the organisation. The Dutch champion Loek van Wely played Rebel Century in February 2002. Again thousands of internet visitors followed an exciting match.
