Oss
got its town prevelages in the year 1399 granted by
duchess Johanna van Brabant (1356-1406).
In those days there were several wars between Brabant and Gelre (
Gelderland) and in 1387 war broke out and Oss was set to fire.
It ended with a peacetreaty of Ravenstein in 1399 with Grave and Oijen
annexed by Gelre. However 79 years later disaster struck Brabant again
and war broke out with the old ennemy Gelre in 1478 and Oss was on fire and
distroyed by their armies. Oss was reoccupied by Spanish troops
during the "Tachtigjarige Oorlog" Eighty years of war. In 1751 the major
part of the town was distroyed by fire again and the firebrigate was established.
The industrials arrived in 1801, which was an obvious improvement to
Oss and surrounding areas. The first one to arrive were the Jurgens's.
They started the production of artificial butter
in Oss and were actually those, who introduced this type of butter, called
margarine.
In 1856 a cottonwool plant was established by Daniel van den Bergh,
which became known as the carpet factory "Bergoss".
Followed by the butchers Nathan and Arnold van Zwanenberg in 1885, who started a meat
factory.
In the year 1923 Organon was founded by Saal van Zwanenberg.
Eight years later a Philips establishment came to Oss and resided
in the old Jurgens plant.
This industrialization would have a great impact on the future of Oss.
