Our country is also known as THE NETHERLANDS, The Low Countries. The European part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands consists of 41.160 Kmē of land, of which 1705 Kmē is water. It was given the name since the majority of our country is below sealevel and therefore it's people have fought a continuous battle against water. It's however believed, that this nightmare ended forever when the last part of the DELTA project finished. Since the latest reorganisation the village is part of a unit consisting of three villages: Schaijk, Reek and Zeeland. This unit is called LANDERD. Apart from newly build living areas the structure of each village is unchanged ever since. As a lot of places in the past, were originally constructed on infertile soil, sand, meaning poverty, since the south of Holland mainly consisted of agricultural areas. The appearance of those places must have been quit different, since the the river Maas was not canalized and as a consequence the water was allowed to flood some of the land once a year by more or less controllable dike flooding gates. Development progressed in these areas through the centuries to an unexpected wealth solely by the arrival of the industrials. |
