The International TurtleClub was founded in 1989 on the Greek island of Zakynthos. Here a group of tourists from different countries in Europe met during their summer holiday. For all of them it was not the first time they went to Greece, they fell in love with this country and it’s many beautiful islands.
During this holiday this group of tourists became friends and promised each other to stay in contact and to inform each other about the different islands they visited before. The group needed a name and this was not hard to be found. Zakynthos is the island where the huge sea turtle (the karetta) lay their eggs on the beach, we talked a lot about them but never did see one of them and because it was a holiday and the tempo of life was slow the name became “International TurtleClub”.
