Meanings of DOUBLES and of REDOUBLES

The principles of counter actions against opponent's overcalls and doubles is described elsewhere. Here the meanings of doubles and redoubles is given for some frequently occurring situations.

Responsive Double:

Situation:
In the fourth hand after your partner's take out double and an opening suit raising response.

Meaning:
Denies any 5-card, but offers two 4-suiters and >=8 hcp's.

Defensive Double:


Situation:
After preemptive openings.
Meaning:
Strong one suited hand, the superMAF convention

Competitive Double:

Situation:
Competitive bidding on 2/3-level
Meaning:
I guess they will go down. You too? Then leave it in. Else:
If you cannot make 2 or more tricks, take it out.
Do what I did:
Apply the Law of Total Tricks

Situation:
after each opponent's interference during Blackwood auction
Meaning:
"double" means 0 aces or kings
"redouble" also means 0 aces or kings.
"pass" always means 1 ace or 1 king

Support Redouble

Situation:
1. When your partner has made an overcall or
2. As an opener after you partners response
3. As a responder after a doubled opening bid
Meaning:
1. and 2. Shows support, non-forcing,
to weak for a limit raise
3. Long trump suit, 4+card, 8-9 hcp's

Sohl Double

Situation:
In the negative double position
after the bidding series: 1©, 1, ??
Meaning:
The double shows that you intended to call 1 too.
So you have a 4-card and you expect a Sohl rebid

S.O.S.-Redouble:

Situation:
Partner's overcall in the second hand has been doubled
Meaning:
Any other suit is probably better,
so next turn choose another one.

1NT-Redouble:

Situation:
Partner opened 1NT, which was doubled by the opponents in the second hand
Meaning:
Please make a relay, I am weak and I hold a long suit.
We should to play a 2-level contract.

Double for Penalty:

Situation:
Usually when the opponents have reached the game
Meaning:
To penalize the opponents and so to obtain a better score
Commonly doubles on a lower level have some conventional meaning;
a double on 2/3-level is nearly always competitive
The bubble double and double of an opening bid of a strong balanced hand
may be turned into a penalty double.

Lightner Slam-Double:

Situation:
The opponents have reached a slam contract.
Meaning:
Partner please make a special lead for my void.

Bubble Double:
a MAF-fe invention

Situation:
After weak NT openings
and other openings that BUBBLE up out of empty hands, (like presision's 1).
Meaning:
At least one 4-card major and >=10 hcp's, no 5-cards.
Partner's pass makes the double "for penalty"

Support Redouble

Situation:
When partner's major suit response,
has been doubled.
Meaning:
shows a weak support,
so leave it in.

Lead Double

Situation:
Right after a conventional bid in a suit
e.g. after: Ghestem, Stayman, Jacoby transfers,
opponents Blackwood bidding, control bidding, etc.
Meaning:
Request to lead a small card of the suit called,
as soon as your partner is on turn.

Delayed Take Out Double

Situation:
When it is the your second turn,
the first time you passed,
and both opponents have called different suits.
Meaning:
your second turn double shows:
4+cards in the two remaining suits and 8-11 hcp's

Psychedelic Double

Situation:
The psychedelic double is multi-way:
  • a: In negative double position:
    • after: 1, 1, ??
    • after: 1, 1©, ??
  • b: Long past midnight, when the wind is howling, when the opponents have
    open 1 such and such times and not before taking (or tanking) 3 double glasses of straight bourbon.
Meaning:
  • a:This "double" is in fact a "psychedelic PASS", which might mean a lot.
  • b: This double is to keep the bidding " open " for opener
    and give him a chance to bid a more clear contract
