What is BRIDGE ?

Bridge is one of those rare card games that should be played according to a set of officially declared rules. The national bridge leagues, like the NBB in Holland, in a lot of countries have agreed on a common "lawlike" set of rules (an over 100 pages counting booklet ).

This looks boring at first sight but it is on the contrary the result of people getting bewildered by the beauty of the game. As you may understand, bewildered people easily turn into fanatic addicts, which inescapably leads to playing matches, commonly called "bridge drives". All this caused a need for "rules of the game".

In the Netherlands over 100,000 people ( of the 16 million dutchmen) play bridge at least once a week at a drive organized by their own bridge club of which they are members. These drives are usually held during an average three hours between 19.00 and 24.00 on week days. Above all these member players there is probably an even greater amount of people who regularly play bridge at homes, just for the fun and cosiness of it.
Many of these bridge players also take part in all kinds of tournament that are organized all the year around.

This homepage does not mean to explain the bridge game. It is however interesting to know that bridge is played by two teams, of two people each, against each other. So all you need to play bridge are a table, four chairs and a set of playing cards.

Bridge is a fascinating game for people of all ages (from about 13 to 100 years old) and for woman and man alike. In the Netherlands many people start playing bridge for the first time when they are over 60 years old, and afterwards they never stop. They enjoy bridge in a multiple way: as an interesting and beautiful game, as a challenging match and as a nice social event where you can make new friends. Of course everybody may emphasize his own point.
