Since Roman times in the Maestrichtien, found in the southwestern tip of the
province of Limburg (Netherlands), subterranean limestone quarries have been
exploited for building purposes. As a result more than 200 small and a few very extensive (up to 1,000,000 m2) labyrinths of galleries have been excavated. The climathological conditions are comparable to those of caves. Real troglobionts are absent but many troglophile species can be found. They are of great importance of hibernating bats. A list of entrances, with a short description of the quarries is given. On the map these entrances are indicated. You will find information about the possibility of visting caves, geological peculiarities and excursions and links to other sites. |
